Nightingale Village - Architects Showcase their Plans
Nightingale Village held its latest information session at Federation Square on Monday night. Speaking to a full-house, the Nightingale team and each architects delivered a fantastic overview of the Nightingale Village vision, the Bauguppen concept and a showcase of the preliminary designs for each of the seven apartment buildings that will make up the village.
The apartment buildings will be clustered along Duckett street in Brunswick, and they will include many progressive initiatives for affordable housing , environmental design and fostering communities. For example:
A significant percentage of housing in the village will be made available to first home buyers, key workers and low income households.
The buildings will be ‘car free’ but residents will have access to a carshare hub for up to 20 cars, and parking for up to 700 bicycles.
Each building will include materials and design features that are ecologically sustainable, including green roofs and walls.· Each building will include various types of communal spaces to encourage social interaction.
At this stage, three of the developments will be undertaken as Baugruppen (‘build group’) projects where the future residents take on a more active role in the development, and provide development funding (as opposed to a traditional purchase deposit) and take a share in the land title. This model is seeking to deliver housing which is 30% lower in price than the equivalent developer-produced product.
Town planning applications have been lodged for the first buildings in the Village, and ballots for each building will roll out over the coming 6-12 months.
